Nina & The Buffalo Riders and Mike Galbraith restart First Stop Friday, Oct 7

Ferndale Library Resumes ‘First Stop Friday’ Concert Series Oct 7
Free Afterhours Performances Sponsored by Friends of the Ferndale Library

It’s time to get loud in the Ferndale Library, again! On Fri. Oct. 7, The Ferndale Area District Library marks its first full month of being back open on Fridays since its recent millage passing by resuming its bi-monthly local music concert series, First Stop Friday. Sponsored by The Friends of the Ferndale Library, this free concert is hosted in the Library’s Community Room, and this month features Nina & The Buffalo Riders and singer/songwriter Mike Galbraith.

“First Stop Friday” was spearheaded by FADL’s Head of Circulation Services, Kelly Bennett, back in 2010, offering local music fans an ideal way to kick off their evening’s entertainment. In 2014, when the Library had to unfortunately cut back operation hours on Fridays, it became “Start HERE Saturdays.” Well…long story short, First Stop Friday concerts have returned!

The concerts can be as loud and as live as any performer needs them to be, so one shouldn’t presumably anticipate a typical soft-folk coffeeshop open mic night vibe just because you’re in a library. With support of the Friends of the Ferndale Library, Bennett has begun curating lineups of top tier local talent, the same rock, folk and hip-hop acts you’ll see at any major venue around the Greater Detroit area.

Nina & The Buffalo Riders are surefire crowd–pleasers, blending 70s blues rock, indie-psychedelia and folk-rock; a tight, versatile instrumental ensemble supports the sensational singing voice and live presence of Nina Sofia, while intricate solos and propulsive rhythms can kick things into high gear or pare things back for a showstopping ballad.

Mike Galbraith’s influences blend modern country-tinged indie-rock acts like Wilco, along with rustled-and-tumbled blues-pop flavors of The Replacements. When Galbraith belts a bluesy note, the whole room feels it, with this gravelly timbre that plucks at the heartstrings, while his main collaborator James Anthony strums a sublime lead along the frets of an accompanying guitar.
