Last March, your Ferndale Public Library participated in a food drive for Gleaners Community Food Bank, the charitable campaign was called Food For Fines / Food For Thought. Patrons were permitted to take up to $5 of overdue fines off of their library accounts by donating at least 5 (or more) non perishable food items (that were not yet expired).
Through the combined efforts of local library communities, more than 8,000 lbs. of food were donated and delivered to Gleaners Community Food Bank and community pantries. This food will be distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters throughout Wayne, Macomb, Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties – serving up to 7,300 meals or more for our neighbors in need.
Our partnership with Gleaners in these food drives is a boost to hunger relief efforts, increasing the magnanimous organization’s ability to supply emergency food to southeast Michigan communities but also helps raise awareness about the issue of hunger. Thus, Food For Thought – We were happy to use your donated foot items to forgive overdue fees, but we also hope that you came away considering those in need. We thank all of our patrons for their thoughtful donations and we have just heard back from Gleaners’ food and fund drive coordinator this week: saying that they look forward to working with us next year.
